PE, Physical Activities and Trips

Judo Lessons

As part of our PE Lessons Phil Selway and Sarah Gratton come into school to provide Judo Lessons for the SNRB pupils. The sessions not only stimulate sensory difficulties but also encourage pupils to develop listening and discipline skills. Pupils have been learning rolls and throws with Phil and Sarah and as you'll see from the photos, all pupils have not only learnt new skills but have had fun doing so.

Outside school Phil runs his own Club in Pontypool, which is attended by some of the SNRB pupils. The Club has both non able-bodied and able-bodied participants and is suitable for anyone aged 5 years and over. Training takes place on Mondays: 6 -7:30pm (juniors), 7:30 - 9pm (seniors) and one Saturday a month.

Phil coaches people with varying disabilities; both Phil and his Club's moments of glory include assisting Sarah to her Olympic Silver Medal in the Bejing Special Olympics and Ben Wharton gaining his Olympic Silver Medal in the 2011 Special Olympics in Athens. Sarah now runs her own Club on Tuesdays in Ystrad Deri Community Centre in Tredegar. Classes run 6pm onwards.

Gilwern Outdoor Education Centre

Each September pupils from Abersychan SNRB have attended Gilwern Outdoor Education Centre. Pupils stay overnight, usually for around three days and two nights. During their time there, they experience opportunities to develop social and independence skills through the activities presented. Although pupils did attend Gilwern in September 2011, while canoeing the camera ended up at the bottom of the canal!! The following photos are from September 2010.

April 2012: We will be asking for a rough idea of which pupils are interested in going to Gilwern in September 2012.

Boulders Indoor Climbing Centre

Througout Spring 2012, every Wednesday we have been visiting Boulders Indoor Climbing Centre in Cardiff with Derek and Dean from Torfaen Sports Development. While developing our climbing skills we have also improved our confidence levels, team-work and problem solving skills. In trying to make progress with our fitness levels we've improved our co-ordination, balance, strength and flexibilty. After each session we always feel a sense of achievement and success.
