Our Primary Schools are Cwmffrwdoer, Garnteg, Hillside, Pontnewynydd, Penygarn, St Peters and Victoria.
At Abersychan School, we strive to make the transition phase between Key Stage 2 and 3 as seamless as possible and in order to achieve this, our Transition Programme starts as early as Year 4.
In Year 4 & 5, primary school pupils visit us at Abersychan and participate in lessons and activities within the school grounds to help familiarise them with the school site, classrooms and teachers.
For the Year 6 pupils, the transition programme intensifies in the final year of primary school and begins with a visit from Mrs Rumble in September. During this visit, pupils are given a presentation about Abersychan School and given the opportunity to ask any questions they may have regarding their new school.
Then, in October pupils and parents are invited to an Open Evening at the school which gives further opportunity for contact and questions to be answered. This is then followed by a Year 6 Transition Day at Abersychan School where pupils undertake a timetabled day of lessons as if they were already a pupil of the school.
In the interim period between formal visits, Year 6 pupils visit as a school and undertake Art / Technology lessons on a weekly basis. Pupils are also given Transition Booklets to work through within their Junior School class and these are then transferred to Abersychan and completed within the form periods.
Primary School pupils will visit to watch the school panto at Christmas. Year 6 pupils will be invited to participate in the performance.
In April, Miss Rees once again visits each Junior School and collates information about each individual child to enable the process to begin of placing individuals into classes. This information gathering process allows us to ensure that friendship groups are respected and that classes are correctly composed and balanced for the start of September. Pupils and parents alike are made aware of form groups and classes in July and any necessary changes can then, if possible be accommodated.
Year Six pupils will once again visit us in July for the Torfaen Roll Over Day. This will provide an opportunity for pupils to meet their new form tutors and teachers, undertake a tour of the school and generally become more familiar with the site and procedures.
The Year 6 Parents Evening in July is the last point of contact parents and pupils have with the school before the transfer process is complete and Year 6 become Year 7!
